A semiotic analysis in new zealand government’s covid-19 vaccination posters

This research is aimed to search for the meaning of signs that are contained
on New Zealand Government’s COVID-19 vaccination posters, and it is also aimed
to explain its semiosis processes. The unit of analysis of this research is the COVID-
19 vaccination posters that are downloaded from the website www.covid19.govt.nz.
The researcher conducts the data selection by using purposive sampling where only
relevant posters will be proceed for analysis. As a result, 8 posters are selected. The
methodology used in this research is qualitative method in which the researcher
investigates and explains the meaning of the signs and its semiosis processes using
Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic theory. According to Peircean semiotics, a
cognitive thought process called semiosis which involves the representamen, the
object, and the interpretant is used to interpret the meaning of signs. From the
posters, the researcher identifies 8 icons and 8 symbols. The findings of this
research shows that the posters contain a hidden message about the outcomes after
being vaccinated as it is an important and a crucial key to defeat COVID-19 and to
protect the community.
