This research aims to reveal how the efforts of Nousha Husseini, as the main
character construct her identity through hybridity due to the effects of diaspora as a
second-generation of immigrant. The research question uses a qualitative method
with descriptive analysis. It is supported by the Character and Characterization
theory by Joseph M. Boggs and Denis W. Petrie, and Cultural Identity and Diaspora
concept by Stuart Hall. Cultural problems faced by Nousha as a second-generation of
Iranian immigrant in America who was trying to apply Iranian culture in America.
Her parents did not allow her to practice American culture and wants her to preserve
the Iranian culture. Nousha applies her cultural identity by eating Iranian and
American food, following an arranged marriage tradition, and marrying a Muslim
man, but also being an open-minded and free person, living with the opposite sex,
and smoke weed. The diaspora effect that Nousha experienced was confusing her
identity and adopting American culture. Identity crisis due to diaspora effects
requires her to negotiate by dating with American man but continue to attend the
arranged marriage tradition, and eat Iranian and American food. Nousha performs
her hybridity by speaking two languages and combining two cultural elements.
