Challenging Prejudice: Islamic Tenets and Values in Laila Lalami’s The Other Americans (2019), 2021.
Said's Orientalism provides a critique towards a subtle and Eurocentric prejudice at the Orient particularly the orientalists' viewpoints towards the Arab Muslim and Islam community. After 9/11, the stereotypes and generalizations against Arab Muslims and Islam are exacerbated. This analysis aims to challenge those prejudicial perceptions and orientalist views by examining Laila Lalami's The Other Americans through the Islamic tenets and values that are present in the novel. The method used in this research is a Critical Textual Analysis method with a postcolonial approach by using the concept of Othering and prejudice in Orientalism followed by secondary data sources derived from scholarly articles. The results found the text challenge the prejudicial perception through Islamic tenets such as the practice of Qur’an recital and fasting (sawm) that promotes Islam as consolation and promotes peace, Islamic tenets through surah Quran also breaks patriarchal prejudice by counter the one-sided interpretation of patriarchal view in Islam which often misunderstood. Moreover, the text challenges the image of savagery and backwardness through Islamic values that reflects the qualities of prophet Muhammad by depicting the values of perseverance (istiqamah), compassion, and innovative through embracing entrepreneurship. The analysis shows that the prejudicial perceptions that are perpetuated by insularity and ignorance towards Islam are challenged through the Islamic tenets and values that are promoted in Islam and its adherents in its practice. Therefore, the prejudicial views towards Muslim should be taken into account as it neglected virtues of Islam which far from the image of violent prejudice.
