This research aims to analyze the narration and the roles of several main characters in
Aryanto Yuniawan’s Battle of Surabaya film (2015) using a structural approach
introduced by Vladimir Propp in his book, Morphology of Folktale (1982) called
function. The methodology used in this research is a descriptive-qualitative method.
Based on the practice “Function = Action (event) + position”, the same actions from
various characters have different values depending on their place in the story. The next
approach that will be used is The Sphere of the Action. This approach is a specific
function that should be performed by a respective character to fulfill their respective
purpose for the narrative. Therefore, this research discovered that Battle of Surabaya
film has 20 of 31 functions contained within, and 5 main characters that performed
their specific functions and fulfilled their sphere of action as the specific folktale
character. As the result, Battle of Surabaya film can be categorized as a folktale genre
film according to the 20 functions found consecutively from the action of the 5 main
characters that also perform their respective purpose as folktale characters in the film
