This research aims to examine that the loss of Eleanor’s mother during her developmental stage has a huge effect on her behavior as an adult. Eleanor has abnormal behavior. Her abnormal behaviors are hallucinations, isolation from society, and alcohol dependence. The method of the research is descriptive qualitative. The instrument of the research is the writer as the subject of research by collecting, reading, understanding, identifying, and analyzing data collected from the Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine novel. To strengthen the research, the writer uses psychosexual development theory and characterization as the concept. The result of this research is Eleanor cannot pass the psychosexual development stage perfectly. Eleanor experienced fixation in the phallic stage due to the death of her mother as her sole parental figure. Eleanor becomes a person who has abnormal behavior because the memory of her mother still lingers in her life which shows in her character and interactions with other people around her such as being lonely, alcoholic, and eccentric. Therefore, her abnormal behavior happens because she tries to substitute the absence of her mother by recreating the past events that she had with her mother in her life such as doing weekly chats, drinking alcohol, and doing anything based on her mother’s perspective.
