The aim of this research is to investigate domestic violence issues and determine
the causal connections between patriarchal and intersectional problems. This
research used the novel published in 2021 by Cherie Jones How the One-Armed
Sister Sweeps Her House as the main data of the research. The data focused on
women character’s experiences in the novel; Lala, Wilma, and Esme. Domestic
violence was contained in a massive portion in the novel, the writer found some
forms of domestic violence; Physical Violence, Sexual Violence, Phycological
Aggression, Economic Abuse, Intimidation, and Coercions and Threats. Those
forms of violence were argued as the power and control of husbands over their
wives which reflected the imbalance power in the family. By using Sylvia Walby’s
theory of patriarchy, the writer found that patriarchal culture was portrayed in the
novel. Intersectional theory by Kimberle Crenshaw also engaged to examine the
other causal relations to the domestic violence, and the writer found that class and
age were the subcategories of intersection that were contribute into the violence. In
conclusion, this research argued that the domestic violence that happened in the
novel was the power and control behavior of men against women, and how
patriarchy, class and age were intersect to expose the multiple burdens of their
violence
