This research aims to analyze how consumption behavior is described by
Salwa, the main character in the novel, and how the commodity can construct the
identity of an Arab Muslim woman in Laila Halaby’s novel entitled Once in a
Promised Land. This research uses qualitative method to collect the important data
from the novel that are related with the analysis and close textual analysis method
to analyze the data. This research also uses Stuart Hall’s theory which is Cultural
Identity and Diaspora as well as Consumer Culture Theory by Eric J. Arnould and
Craig J. Thompson. In the novel, the clothes which are silk-pajamas that the female
protagonist consumes can help construct her identity. The result of this research
shows that the use of silk-pajamas by the female character can be used as a medium
when someone is going through negotiation process in their identity construction
which can provides the feeling of freedom and comfort. To conclude, commodities
specifically in this case, clothing, can hold value and meaning that is described in
the novel which began to be discovered from her consumption behavior and this
eventually lead to her identity construction as an Arab Muslim woman
