This research aims to find out the students’ grammatical errors and the
factors that influence errors in writing descriptive text made by the seventh grade
of MTs Madinatunnajah. The method used in this research is qualitative by doing
field research applying the theory of error analysis by Carl James and applying the
theory of factors that influence error by Jack Richard. This research is trying to
analyze how the grammatical errors were classified into five types and how the
factors that influence error can be clustered into four categories. The result shows
that there are four types of errors found in students' writing, they are omission 21
errors, addition 10 errors, misformation 65 errors, and misordering 4 errors. In
addition, there are four factors that influence students’ error, they are
overgeneralization, ignorance of rule restriction, incomplete application of rule, and
false concept hypothesized. In conclusion, misformation is the highest frequency in
error classification, it is because the students failed to use the correct English rules.
Therefore, ignorance of rule restriction is the highest frequency in factors of error,
it is because the students do not adhere to the English structure.
