This thesis aims to analyze the anxiety and defense mechanisms experienced by Shirley during the process of writing a novel in Shirley's film. This study uses a descriptive qualitative research method with psychoanalysis theory by sgimund freud as a theory in analyzing anxiety and defense mechanisms. This research was conducted by analyzing the character first using the theory of character and characterization in the film. Then proceed with analyzing the psychological state, namely anxiety and defense mechanisms experienced by Shirley. The results of this study indicate that Shirley as a novelist character during the writing process has several types of anxiety, namely neurotic anxiety, realistic anxiety, and moral anxiety. The types of defense mechanisms used by Shirley in balancing her ego are displacement, denial, projection, and sublimation. From the results of the study, it can be concluded that Shirley uses a defense mechanism to protect the ego during the writing process. In addition, the process of writing the work is also a defense mechanism known as sublimation in which Shirley transfers her anxiety into works that are more acceptable to the public
