This study aims at analyzing the type and how the commissive speech acts uttered in the first United States presidential debate 2020. The data are analyzed descriptively by using John R.Searle and Vanderveken’s theory. Searle and Vanderveken argue that there are 14 kind of commissive speech act but this study only found 11 kind of commissive, there are: refuse (64), assure (32), commit (24), accept (19), contract/covenant/bet (17), promise (16), threaten (16), offer (3), swear (2), pledge (1), and guarantee/warrant (1) in which they uttered directly and indirectly. Meanwhile, three types of commissive speech act did not occur in the debate are vow, consent, and bid.
