This study aims to determine the types of language impairment performed by
autistic characters and how verbal and non-verbal pragmatic language impairments are
depicted in the main character Autism in Atypical films seasons one and two. In analyzing
and describing language impairment in the film, the research used a qualitative
descriptive method. Autistic characters in Atypical films use 235 language impairments.
These disorders include verbal and non-verbal language, language impairment verbal
such as literal interpretation 64, violation of maxims 40, pedantic speech 17, politeness
difficulty 16, turn-taking violation 14, pronoun reversal 12, monologue 7, odd prosody 6,
echolalia 6, and idiosyncratic 2. In addition, this research found pragmatic language
impairment, which was influenced by the non-verbal part. These errors include clumsy or
gauche body language 64, limited facial expressions 7, inappropriate facial expressions
12, peculiar/stiff gazes 16, limited use of gesture obtained 40. Problems influence
language impairment in developing thoughts and difficulties adjusting the tone and
intonation of speech. Such as, verbal errors occur in Autism characters in this film. In
communicating, verbal and non-verbal languages such as gestures and others are also
important. However, for Autistic characters, it is difficult to control the non-verbal
language well. So that non-verbal communication is disrupted
