The Identity Crisis Reflected In The Character Of Nila In and The Mountain's Echoed by Khaled Hosseini
Pratiwi Kalinina - Personal Name
This research aims to examine the identity crisis experienced by Nila, a
female character in Khaled Hosseini’s novel, And the Mountain’s Echoed (2013).
This research uses the qualitative method and descriptive analysis. This research
also uses the concept of identity crisis and the theory of psychosocial development
presented by Erik Erikson. The result shows that Nila is a rebellious, lonely, and
low self-esteem person who lacks parental affection. The writer argues that Nila
had an identity crisis because of the failure of her psychosocial development
process. Nila failed to develop a sense of industry because she did not succeed in
developing skills and interacting with her peers so that she felt inferior. Nila cannot
find her identity and instead experiences role confusion due to rejection from
society in Afghanistan because of differences in her behavior and appearance. She
is also unable to bear children due to her illness so she questions her role as a
woman. Nila was unable to develop a sense of intimacy due to failure in her
marriage, so she lost her role as a wife. Nila failed to build a sense of stagnation
because her relationship with her daughter had been damaged so that she lost her
role as a mother. Her identity crisis finally leads her to despair which ends in her
suicide. The writer found that Nila's character shows how important social
relationships are in influencing self-identity.
