This thesis discuss how Asian American character depicted as inferior in Resident Evil 4: Afterlife with Orientalism discourse. This research aim is try to argue why Asian American in Hollywood depicted in negative depiction. This thesis use the case from the depiction of a character named Kim Yong in this film. Orientalism is an Edward Said’s post-colonial concept that West or Europe defining themselve as superior and defining East or outside the Europe as inferior. This thesis using a qualitative descriptive method.
This thesis found out that this film delegitimizing Kim Yong as an Asian character by depicting Kim Yong as Asian American character as inferior through the lens of white West of United States. Kim Yong portrayed as un-masculine, unable to adapt to situation, and being a West character’s sidekick. This depiction is come from U.S. white people perception about them from the history of Asian wave immigration come to work as heavy labor and coolie in U.S. This depiction is an attempt of Hollywood to marginalize Asian American.
