Amalia Trias Pertiwi, Breaking the Stereotype of the East through Knowledge in Stephen Frears’ Victoria and Abdul (2017) Film. A Thesis: English Literature Department, Faculty of Adab and Humanities, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, 2021.
This research explores how the main character Abdul, breaks the Western stereotypes of the East as portrayed in Victoria and Abdul film through his knowledge. The research aims to show how Abdul as an Easterner in the film, gained his power within the British Monarchy with his intelligence and how it shapes his power as viewed through the Orientalism. The method used in this research is the descriptive qualitative method involving the concept of Orientalism by Edward Said and Characterisation theory in films by Joseph M. Boggs and Dennis W. Petrie. With that in mind, the researcher analyses Abdul’s portrayal wto gain a deeper understanding of Abdul’s depiction in the film and also analyses the significance of his intelligence in influencing his power. The results show that Abdul's character is portrayed as brave, optimistic, intelligent, polite, and trustworthy which are very different from how the West portrays the East. These characteristics are influenced by his religion, Islam, which is also responsible in him being able to break the Western doctrines and also shows that all the Western perspective about the East is only a construction. His close friendship with Queen Victoria in which the Queen treated Abdul as a spiritual teacher, also serves as an example of the power Abdul had. In conclusion, this research can be used to reveal a different representation of the East that is no longer being shown as the oppressed and inferior.
