This research aims to analyze the kinds of shift in complex sentence
translation from English into Indonesian. This research also aims to analyze the
impact of the shifts on transferring message from the source text into the target
text. The researcher relies on the theory of translation shift proposed by J.C.
Catford
The researcher uses a descriptive qualitative method. The data of English
complex sentence taken from The Qur’aan and Modern Science: Compatible or
Incompatible book and its translation. The researcher analyze the kinds of shift
that occurs to the translation of complex sentence components such as
independent clause, dependent clause, and subordinating conjunction from
English into Indonesian.
The research shows that there are 36 shift cases in 12 data of complex
sentence translation where category shifts occur dominantly in 34 cases and level
shift occur in 2 cases. From 12 data of complex sentences translation, the shift
occurs dominantly with 23 of 36 cases to 6 data where the source text is translated
into two sentences. Furthermore, unit shift is the most frequent shift which
constitutes 18 of 36 cases or 50% of all shift occurrences. The researcher also.
