Acceptability in the ‘Chef’ Movie Subtitle. A Thesis: English Letters Department, Adab

This study is aimed to discuss about direct translation techniques used in the
'Chef' movie subtitle and its acceptability. Whether the food material culture can be
translated using these techniques or not. Qualitative method are employed as a conceptual
frame work for this study. It started by watching the movie and compared it to the
translation to find the data. Then the researcher looked up what the translation techniques
are implemented in the data to analyze how the translator applied the techniques. After
that, the researcher classifies the data based on types of direct translation techniques and
its acceptability. Finally, the researcher can conclude that the most translator widely used
in translating ‘Chef’ movie subtitle is a borrowing technique with eight data, then
followed by a literal technique with four data, and ended by a calque technique with one
data. The analysis also has been separated into a translation with combined technique
category which is found in three data. Then, the final score of translation quality in terms
of acceptability is 2.38 (on a scale of 1 to 3). It means that the translation is mostly in
accordance with the rule of language in the target text.
