This research examines grammatical cohesion devices of reference in public opinion
text of The Jakarta Post online newspaper. The data are collected from public
opinion text of The Jakarta Post online newspaper ranged from November 2016
until June 2017, with the theme of Basuki Tjahaja Purnama’s blasphemy case. This
research purposes to find out the types and functions of reference items in the public
opinion text based on M.A.K Halliday and Ruqaiya Hasan’s theory of reference,
using descriptive qualitative method. The researcher limits the problem by focusing
the research on finding, classifying, identifying and explaining the grammatical
cohesion devices of references in public opinion texts of The Jakarta Post. The
result reveals that there are three types of cohesion devices of reference in public
opinion texts of The Jakarta Post online newspaper, which are personal reference,
demonstrative reference, and comparative reference. These references in the texts
function to give comprehensive meaning of the context
