Movie Subtitle Thesis: English Letters Department, Faculty of Adab and Humanity,
State Islamic University of Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, 2018. This research discussed
about types of modulation procedure on English-Indonesian translation in the Edge of
Seventeen movie subtitle.
This research discusses about modulation procedure in translation of the Edge
of Seventeen Movie subtitle translated. The objective of this research aims to find out
the two types of modulation that translator used in translating the dialogues by
changing the point of view without changing the message of the dialogue in target
language and finding the units which using modulation procedure in the subtitles.
This research uses qualitative methods to analyze the data indicate the modulation
procedure based on Vinay and Dalbernet’s theory. The data found by reading subtitle
in source text and target language text then classifying the words or phrases within
the dialogues that indicate type of modulation procedure. After analyzing the data,
They consist of five types of modulation, they are: 4 data of abstract for concrete, 4
data of negation of the opposite, 3 data of explicative modulation, 1 data of reversal
of term, and 9 data of free modulation. It can conclude that free modulation in the
most commonly used by the translator than other ten types of fixed modulation. As
the result, by using modulation procedure in translating some words and phrases in
the movie subtitle, the message which given through the translations are easily
understood by the viewers.
