This research discusses about racial discrimination toward Black
Americans and their struggle to reach the equality in The Butler film. This
research focuses on analyzing Black Americans characters which are dominated
by the Whites. The data of this research is analyzed using the concept of
Occidentalism. The data of this research are collected from unit analysis and other
sources. In this research, the writer uses descriptive-qualitative analysis as the
method to analyze how Black Americans struggle for equality and how
Occidentalism appear in the film.
From the data analysis, the writer finds that Black Americans succeed to
reach the equality by their struggle. They prove the world that they are capable to
lead the country as the Whites do. They can stand in the same line as an American
without any differentiation between them. They do not want to be more superior
and dominate the Whites but they want to be the same. It is in line with the
concept on Occidentalism by Hasan Hanafi.
