This research aims to observe freedom of main character which presented in
The Shawshank Redemption film (1994) directed by Frank Darabont. The action of the
main character, Andy Dufresne in going beyond his facticity that presented in this film
become significant issue to be observed.
Using qualitative method and descriptive analysis techniques, this research
elaborates the actions of Andy Dufresne as main character through Existentialism of
Jean-Paul Sartre Concept. The researcher also uses a few aspects of cinema study such
as characterization to support understanding and analysis of the main character. By
using existentialism theory and qualitative research methods, researchers found that
The Shawshank Redemption Film shows how Andy's freedom is hampered by the facts
in prison. This reduction in Andy's appreciation of the freedom makes him has several
options to transcend his facticity. Those facts that can hinder Andy’s freedom are also
what makes this film openly shows how some of main character’s actions and free
choices can transcend his facticity in prison and gain his absolute freedom.
