This research discussed about the defense mechanism of the main character,
Charlie Davis, from the novel Girl in Pieces by Kathleen Glasgow. The writer uses
descriptive-qualitat ive as the method of the analysis. Sigmund Freud’s theory of
psychoanalysis is applied to this study in order to analyze the character and find out
what types of defense mechanism the character uses to reduce her anxiety. After
analyzing the character, the writer finds out that Charlie is an introvert and insecure
teenager with anxiety. Her unhealthy background story with her parents and peers is
affecting her way in growing up. The character applied three defense mechanism as the
ways to reduce her anxiety: acting out, rationalization, and sublimation.
