This thesis aims to discuss the tendencies for the Oedipus complex displayed by Reynolds Woodcock, the main character of Phantom Thread film, based on his mannerisms and interactions. This research uses qualitative descriptive method, by describing the data found in the film, in this case, the characterization of Reynolds Woodcock. The data described will then be analyzed using the Psychoanalysis theory by Sigmund Freud, more specifically the concept of Oedipus complex. The Psychoanalysis theory is used to explain the complexity in Reynolds’ behavior, and how it may correlate to the concept of the Oedipus complex. The findings showed that Reynolds’ intricate behavior is the result of unresolved Oedipus complex, which impacts his behavior to be more complicated in general and also caused him to be unable to pursue a long-term relationship with a woman. Furthermore, it also showed that unresolved emotions have the potential to be neurotic to the mind.
