American Hustle is a 2013 American crime thriller comedy drama directed by David O. Russell. Written by Eric Warren Singer and Russell who were inspired by FBI ABSCAM operations in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The research aims to shed light on the wrong actions taken by the main characters to achieve their American dream which is considered to crime the understanding of existing regulations. The research is analyzed by using qualitative descriptive to analyze the process in findings, found in the scene and dialogue of the film. The research uses the Representation theory by Stuart Hall and the American Dream theory from James Truslow Adams to analyze this issue. In addition, this research also contained Joseph Boggs and Petrie's Characterization theory in order to support the explanation of the American Dream. Furthermore, from the analysis of this film, it can be concluded that the two main characters represent the American Dream in a criminal way through three forms. Their character shares an American characteristic, their desire to achieve their dream, and the dirty deeds they did in their quest for the American Dream. On the other hand, the results also found that monetary success and low parental participation factors caused the two main characters in the American Hustle film to be trapped in the crime of American Dream.
