Conversational Overlaps in Star English Talk Show Ebs Tv Brian Joo Episode
Fauzan Ramdhoni - Personal Name
In this research, the writer discusses the overlap that occurs in an interview
between Dorothy Nam and Brian Joo. It is a qualitative research. The theory that is
used in this research is a conversation analysis by Emanuel A. Schegloff. The writer
analyzes on how non-competitive overlap occurs by Nam and Brian, and some kind
of occurrences of non-competitive overlap that mostly happen. The writer also uses
Genderlect Theory by Deborah Tannen to do a comparative analysis between the
female and the male speaker.
This research shows that the overlap is such a common phenomenon that
occurs in a conversation. The writer finds out sixteen continuer overlaps, twelve
terminal overlaps, four choral and one conditional access to turn. In the interview
between Nam and Brian, overlap mostly occurs by Nam. Therefore, it shows that a
female does an overlap more than a male does. She often uses continuer overlap in
Brian’s turn. A continuer is used to indicate that she is listening and she realized
that Brian is holding the floor.
In conclusion, non-competitive overlap has an important role in the
conversation, it shows both participants in the conversation have an emotional
closeness and enjoy the conversation that they are having in that moment.
