Basterds movie transcript written by Quentin Tarantino. This study applies

the collected data. The analysis shows there are eighteen conversational
implicatures in the movie. The categories of non-observance maxim that mostly
occurred is the flouting maxim. The non-observance of four maxims, namely
maxim of quality, quantity, relation, and manner, happens in the data. Specifically,
the result reveals that the most non-observance maxim happens in the movie is
flouting the maxim of quality regarding to the movie plot that talking about war,
there are many scenes of undercover act that requires the characters to lie. Besides,
flouting the maxim of quality happens mostly because it is found that most of the
utterances are metaphor and sarcasm. Finally, the conversational implicatures in
this movie has an impact to the movie plot and audience even though it fails to
observe the maxims. The implicatures bring a comical tone to the movie while it is
supposed to be serious like most of history-based movies. It proves that not all
utterances that observe the maxims is that not all a good conversation needs to
observe the cooperative principle. The non-observance maxim that generates an
implicature can essentially create a conversation that make sense to the hearer with
a background knowledge and the context of the utterance.
