This research focuses on Liesel Meminger as the main character in The
Book Thief film. The aim of this research is to know about her motivation to steal
the books and to analyze what needs that are fulfilled by her using Motivation and
Hierarchy of Human Needs theory by Abraham H. Maslow. This research uses
qualitative method and descriptive analysis as the technique to analyze the data
with theory of Motivation and Hierarchy of Human Needs that related to search
motivations of main character and hierarchy of needs that should be fulfilled in
the film. The data are collected from dialogues in the script and pictures in the
film.
The results show that Liesel Meminger is 9 years girl and as a
Communist’s daughter has an obsession to steal the books. She is curious about
book because she cannot be able to read and write which are caused by war
situation that Communists are disallowed to live in Germany. The Book Thief
show how Liesel desires and curiosity can make her brave to steal the books and
go against to the government’s laws. Then those motivations drive her to
complete the five of hierarchy of human needs that she fulfills.
