A Conversational Analysis Of Turn Taking Strategies In Caliphate Chapter One: The Reporter And Chapter Two: Recruitment

This study focused in analyzing the turn taking strategies used between the
participants in a podcast programme called Caliphate Chapter One: The Reporter
and Chapter Two: Recruitment. The aim of this study is to examine how the
participant takes turn in Caliphate Chapter One: The Reporter and Chapter Two:
Recruitment. This research uses descriptive qualitative method in order to fulfill
the objective of the research. The collected data are picked up by data reduction,
and then classified with the same categories to achieve deep and detailed analysis.
Analyzing the data is done by explaining the conversation mechanism then
determining in which strategies turn taking are used and then analyze how it
works using Sternstrom‘s theory. There are 3 kinds of turn taking strategy which
are taking the turn strategy, holding the turn strategy and yielding the turn
strategy. The result in this study shows there are 221 data categorized as turn
taking strategies found in the 2 episodes of the program, 46 of which as taking the
turn strategy (inc. starting up, taking over, and interrupting), 88 holding the turn
strategy (inc. filled pause & verbal filler, silent pause, lexical repetition, new start)
and 87 yielding the turn strategy (inc. prompting, appealing and giving up) were
found in the programme.
