An Analysis Of Taboo Words Using Ethnography Of Speaking Approach In Ride Along Movie

This qualitative research is about discussing the types and the function of taboo words in Ride Along movie also the factor which motivate the characters to use it. The writer analyzes the types of taboo words based on Randall Eggert theory to all characters in this corpus and finds the functions of taboo words they use in their conversation. The writer selects the data to be analyzed by classifying them into some categories and divide them based on its function. Each category is selected based on different function of the taboo words is used to avoid repetition in analyzing the data. The writer used the Hymes’ ethnography of speaking theory to analyze the factors that motivate the characters to use the taboo word. From seven categories of taboo word by Randall Eggert, the writer only finds about five categories that is found in Ride Along movie such as: profanity, obscenity, scatology, slurs, and faunality. Most of taboo word used by the characters are damn, shit, and hell with the most appeared functions is for emphasizing the sentence, anaphoric usage of epithet and interjection. Physiological factor are the main issue where the characters of the movie use taboo word as the response of act sequence that happens in a scene of conversation
