Lexical Cohesive Devices In The Speech By Joko Widodo At The World Economic Forum On East Asia (Wef Ea) And The Indonesia And China Business Forum Gathering

This research aims to examine how the lexical cohesive devices are utilized
to support the cohesiveness of the speech text delivered by President Joko Widodo.
In this research, the writer analyzed two speech texts which delivered in two
agendas; The World Economic Forum on East Asia (WEF EA) in Jakarta and The
Indonesia and China Business Forum Gathering in Shanghai. The writer applies
qualitative method in this research. The writer uses Halliday and Hasan’s theory of
cohesion as a primary theory. In this research, the writer found 26 paragraphs of the
two speech texts which contain of lexical cohesive devices. The finding shows that
the lexical cohesive devices that occur in the two speech texts are 29 repetitions, 3
superordinate, 5 unordered lexical sets, 5 antonyms 4, 5 synonyms, 4 the same
ordered series, and 2 complementary. Then the lexical cohesive devices can support
the cohesiveness of the text by some functions; to maintain the relationship among
sentences within the text in order to keep related each other substantively, and to
emphasize the statement which considered important by the speaker in order to
make the message of that statement can be delivered well to the listener, and as
varying in choosing word. In addition, the lexical cohesive devices found in both
texts are indispensable to form a whole text become cohesive.
