The Representation of the Relationship between America and Japan in Battleship Film

Battleship (2012) film directed by Peter Berg is the unit analysis of this
research. In this research, the writer uses this film to reveal the representation of
two countries, America and Japan. This research also wanted to know the
relationship between America and Japan. The purpose of this research is to know
and understand the character construction from the representation concept by
Stuart Hall. The writer uses qualitative descriptive analysis method to reveal the
findings.
The result shows that Battleship film shows America through the main
character, Hopper, as a hero who saves the world from destruction. The main
character is constructed as a hero in order to represent that America as the
powerful country. Battleship film also shows Japan as a hero. The writer reveals
that Battleship film start to represent Japan positively. It begins to reduce the
negative stereotype of Asian in the film. Battleship film shows the good
relationship between America and Japan.
