Diminutive names and terms of endearment are often used in daily life to create
closeness, and show politeness to someone. The aim of this research is to find out
the different usage of terms of endearment between men and women. The writer
chooses How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days movies as the object of the research. This
research uses qualitative method. The writer watched the movie and gathering the
terms of endearment which used by characters. The analysis uses Brown and
Levinson positive politeness strategy theory and to support the theory, the writer
uses the theory from Klaus P. Schneider about diminutive. Based on 20 data
analysis, the writer found the characters in the movie use five diminutive names
and eight terms of endearment; they are Ben, Benny, Benji, Bennykins, Benny
Wenny, sweetheart, sweetie, muffin, honey, the abbreviated hon, sweetie pie,
darling, and my dear. The result shows that women more use endearment more
than men. Men prefer to use endearment to the people they know, like family and
lovers
