This research discusses metaphor in Saving Mr. Banks Movie Script. It
tells about production of the popular 1964 Walt Disney Studio film, Marry
Poppins. The aim of this research is to find the types of metaphors that are used in
the movie dialogue. Moreover, the researcher identifies words or phrases in movie
script according to the types of metaphors to simplify the understanding of
implied meaning that are contained in the corpus. The researcher uses qualitative
analysis technique, and identifies different kind of metaphors — structural,
ontological, and orientational metaphors — on Saving Mr. Banks movie script by
close reading the theory and the script, watching the movie, classify the
metaphorical expression from the script into the types of metaphor. Then, the
researcher analyzes the conceptual mapping process of metaphor based on Lakoff
and Johnson theory.
The result of the study shows that the characters use metaphorical
expression in case to pursue their purposes. The purposes here being reached by
the speakers to tell the hearer that they need metaphorical expression to describe
more about what they really talk about. Moreover, they want to explain what they
feel through metaphorical expression. They want to show if they are friendly,
enthusiasm, desperate, tortured, trustworthy, serious, save face, influential, care,
and logical to the hearer implicitly. The speaker wants the hearer to more concern
on his or her purposes through metaphorical expression
