Satya Hardiyanti Emran. Translation Strategies of Idiomatic Phrasal Verb in The
Novel Divergent by Veronica Roth An English-Indonesian Novel. A Thesis:
English Letters Department, Adab and Humanities Faculty, State Islamic
University Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, 2016.
The study in this paper focuses to find out what types of idiomatic phrasal
verbs occurred in the novel and also the translation strategies which frequently
used in translating those phrasal verbs, in this case, translation from English into
Indonesian. The unit of analysis of this paper is a novel written by Veronica Roth
entitled Divergent and its translation novel into Indonesian by Anggun
Prameswari.
The method used in this paper is qualitative analysis in which the writer
describes and analyzes the idiomatic phrasal verbs contained in the novel
Divergent. The writer applies translation strategy based on Mona Baker’s theory.
The result of the study based on the analysis consists of two main points.
First, the findings revealed that the three types of phrasal verbs found in the novel
are transitive-separable, transitive-inseparable, and intransitive-inseparable.
Second, the dominant translation strategy of idiomatic phrasal verb was by
paraphrasing. This strategy was applied 10 out of 16 phrasal verbs in the novel.
Though, also there were examples of an idiom with the similar meaning and form,
an idiom with the similar meaning but dissimilar form, and omission as another
strategy used by the translator.
