This research is politeness on the pragmatics scope. The unit analysis of this
qualitative research is the interview between Bill O’Reilly and the United States
President, Donald Trump. It examines politeness as a face-threat mitigating in the
interview, with Brown & Levinson’s politeness strategies as the main theory. This
research is aimed at finding out what kinds of politeness strategies are used by
participants and analyzing the social factors which contribute to the choice of
strategy. As a result, the researcher found that the most strategy chosen by
participants is generally positive politeness strategy. In performing strategies,
O’Reilly used more positive politeness than negative politeness. Meanwhile, Trump
mostly applied positive politeness. It is inversely proportional to the hypothesis that
O’Reilly, as a participant with a lower power level, is expected to use a more
negative politeness strategy to increased politeness. While the president, Trump, is
consistent. From the perspective of sociological variables, it shows that different
power level is dominant enough for Trump but not the most influential social factor
of politeness in this interview. Social distance is generally the reason for both
participants using positive politeness almost in all of their utterances. Then, the rank
of imposition mostly influencing O’Reilly in choosing the strategies. At last, the
research suggests that politeness is not only about extremely respecting others, but
it is a more general concern of showing consideration to others in certain conditions
affecting by social variables.
