This paper aims to study Jack Thorne’s Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Parts One and Two from the perspective of Vladimir Propp's Structuralism, highlighting The Functions and The Spheres of action, the essential elements of a story. The study proposes the utilization of theory within the structural analysis of the text, pinpointing the functional scheme in the story. The paper is also attempting to analyze the behaviour of the main character, Albus Potter, as the issue which supports the main theory throughout the plot.
This research figures that Function is an action or event defined from its significance for the course of the action as it is the essence of Propp's theory. In practical use, Function was the equivalent of Action or Event plus its position according to the story in the sequence. Based on the research findings, there are seven character-functions which actions are interrelated in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Parts One and Two in order to create the structural system which could be analyzed; they are the hero, the dispatcher, the princess, the donor, the helper, the villain, and the false hero. Moreover, from the thirty-one that suggested by Vladimir Propp in his theory, there are thirty functions available in the story. The data on this research shows that the story constructs Albus' behaviour as the hero whose journey was accomplished in order to earn his recognition of self-worth. Additionally, by understanding the main character’s behaviour in the play, the reason for his action can be recognized and the process of identifying the plot in the story become simpler.
