This study is about the non-observance of maxim that aims to find out
conversational implicature that is generated by non-observance maxim in BBC TV
Series Sherlock Season 4: The Final Problem. It is also to discover the meaning of
the conversational implicature that has been found. The writer uses the theory of
Cooperative Principle proposed by Paul Grice for this study. The data are collected
by reading the dialogue transcript. Qualitative method is applied to analyze the
collected data. The results obtained that the most non-observance maxim that
happen are flouting maxim, which from the data that has been analysis that 14 datas
indicates that many characters failed to fulfill this maxim by breaking them, they
tend to talk ambiguously which caused flouting of maxim Manner. This study
concludes that non-observance maxims in this drama are mostly carried out
consciously although there are found some violation maxims that occur
unconsciously and mostly it flouting the Maxim of Manner. The character in this
drama tend to use exaggerating words that contain a lot of metaphors, they also
speak in more variant vocabulary that not many people use in daily conversation.
The reason why many characters in this drama unobserved the maxim, are when the
character lie to cover up secrets, or when they don't want to give too much
information because they fear their identity is known or to cover the secret activities
that they doing, or the characters may give too much information just because they
really want to talk about it even though it's not necessary, which makes flouting of
maxim Quantity. Some characters also didn‟t want being asked so they answer
irrelevantly which caused violation maxim relevance occur.
