This research aims to show the homosexuality represented in Beauty and the
Beast Live Action (2017) film through characterization of Le Fou’s character. The
method used in this research is descriptive qualitative applying the theory of
representation by Stuart Hall and characterization by Joseph M. Boggs. This
research is trying to show how Le Fou as the major character who is represent the
homosexuality and how society would react to this issue in the film, in regards to
conventional society's stereotype and taboo about homosexuality. The result shows
that Le Fou’s character clearly shows his interest in the same gender character,
Gaston. He tends to give certain gestures and actions towards some men in the film.
Moreover, in the end of the film Le Fou turns out to love a ma in pink clothes
character and forgets Gaston. The society in the film shows that they are being
apathetic and ignorant to the homosexual community. These attitudes of the society
in the film also represent the reaction of some people toward homosexual
community. In conclusion, the homosexuality is not fully accept in the society and
some homosexual communities are ignored and not considered as a part of the
society since the differences of sexual orientation.
