This research discusses the subversion of conventional gender expectations in the
film Promising Young Woman (2020) by focusing on the character of Cassie
Thomas. It examines how Cassie deliberately uses traditional femininity to
challenge patriarchal norms and social expectations, drawing on Judith Butler's
theory of gender performativity and Boggs and Petrie's ideas on characterization.
The research examines Cassie's dual roles as target and avenger, examining the
use of stereotypical behaviors, such as feigning drunkenness, to reveal predatory
tendencies and confront individuals who engage in gender-based violence. By
embodying and challenging these assumptions, Cassie exposes the pretense of
gender identity and the pervasive impact of cultural standards. Cassie’s
performative actions, not only confronts the patriarchal system that oppresses her
but also redefines the boundaries of female agency and power. This research
enhances our understanding of how gender performativity can serve as a tool of
resistance and change in modern media, providing a new perspective on the
convergence of gender, authority, and individuality in film.
