Chapter 1 now includes a section on information retrieval as a form of communication, which i hope will illuminate the whole of the rest of the book; information retrieval systems have no existence intheir own right, but only insofar as they enable communication to be maintained between authors and readers, and we overlook this at our peril. Chapter 2, i have enlarged the discussion of recall and relevance by using set theory and notation.
